The old Stay Level.... ah good memories. It had a
release time switch, one was short like about a
second the long setting was as glen said about 4
seocnds. we had ours wired across the mike on
relay to reduce pumping. The level devil was a
gated AGC. you could set the the 'idel' gain and
once threshold was hit it would either expand or
compress. Kinda like a modern Compellor or CR L
SEP or LA4, etc. The SA-39 was the Gates limiter.
Collins had a similar AGC to the Gates Stay
Level... Somebody can check me on this: believe
it was CHUM that had the idea and implemented it
to split the audio into two bands, run through
two wide band AGC's, combine them and then
throught the limiter for a really loud station
sound. The birth of the multiband audio
processing scheme that led to Dorough DAP, CRL,
Oband, Aphex, etc. etc.
