to all who gave me good idea's to track down my high power low modulation
problem.
first i want to thank everyone for all the good shots at finding the culprit
causing the low modulation, but alas none did the trick. you all gave it one
heck of shot.
but after beating my head against it ( the transmitter ) i had to cead in and
get an old timer from continental out. his name is ken (he is retired )and he
is the best thing continental has going for them on older transmitters,
either fm or am it makes no difference, he's their best and an honest man to boot.
he came in on monday, we went through everything i did.
we then went through the tuning set up, hit the high voltage section, the wpm
card, the low voltage, and changed the 3 phase power taps. nothing worked.
tuesday, went as far as checking the atu to see if it had changed. not really
though we did bring it up from 45 ohms to 49 1/2 ohms, than of course is a
slightly better match, but it wouldn't have caused such a drastic problem.
we both left discouraged.
wednesday morning a revelation came to ken, he had come to the conclution
that it had to be T1 that feeds the rf driver card. if it wasn't that he would
had to come back and finish the job no matter how long it took him.
well with the extra rockwell transmitter there right now to use as spare
parts, ken took T1 out and exchange it in the continental.
and low and behold if the doggone thing didn't come completly like it was
ment to.
and checking the transformer there is a nice size break in the secondary
winding.
for those who have a continental 315r-1 that they still care for, if you have
low audio output at high power or your driver board output transisters keep
blowing or shorting.
CHECK THAT STUPID T1 TRANSFORMER FOR AN OPEN SECONDARY WINDING.
now as soon as they let me out of the sanitarium, i'll be able start work on
the rockwell and get it up and online.
