How about just answering the original question? Several others have
provided facts supporting my original point, and all you've done has been
to come up with irrelevant analogies.
Just for kicks, I took a quick look at the ratings section of the Radio
and Records website. In the San Francisco ADI, 3 of the top 5 stations
are AM (not counting KOIT-AM, which appears to be reported with its FM
sister).
Chicago, 2 of the top 5. It varies from market to market, but there are
still a lot of AM's pulling numbers in the big markets. Must be that
great AM fidelity, huh? Couldn't possibly be content, could it? Couldn't
possibly be that those AM's are offering something that someone wants to
listen to, could it?
Yes, in most markets most of the well-rated stations are FM. But, the
continuing success of quite a few AM's disproves your suggestion that
fidelity always wins out over personality and content.
