The absolute best bang for the buck these days are Athena AS-B1 (or B1.2)
speakers.
These ported speakers will give you a taste of high end for under $200.00 a
pair. They sound even better if you replace the cheapo nonpolar electrolytic
caps in the crossovber with some good film caps from a place like Parts Plus.
Best Buy.com has them on slae for $142.00/pair. I bought mine from a Best Buy
store. They were the store demos (Best Buy now only sells them online). I paid
$64.00 for the pair. I use them with an old Advent 300 receiver (recapped,
biased and aligned). They sound GREAT! I only wish I still had a turntable and
some vinyl so I could get some benefit from the legendary Holman TT preamp
this receiver has....

It really does not make a difference about which speaker is Being used
hence AR3's
you can take the same pair Of speakers and place them in different
rooms and with each Room they will sound different...
when I buy speakers... sometimes I bring an Eq, generator and RTA with
Me... once the guy thought I was nuts when I asked him to make sure the
Room I was listening In was referenced. he had no Idea I what I was
talking about. I made arrangements with him to listen after hours...
we went into his so called Speaker/stereo display room with a sliding
glass door.
I picked a set of speakers. then Referenced the Room with the
pink/white noise generator./rta.
after the room was referenced... we then tested other speakers...
Before the reference.some sounded better than others... after the
Reference we determined some speakers that resonated at freqs that we
really didnt like. people Buy stereos with Eq's but have No Idea what
the Eq is really for.
