I don't know if they still do, but 10 years or so ago, up at Gillette, WY,
they used the sirens to call out the fire crews. The sirens would go off as
the call went out on their pagers. We had a pager in the studios at KIML,
we'd get the location and announce it on the air, sponsored by the local
State Farm insurance agent (who happened to be the owners brother). He paid
a flat monthly rate. And you'd better duck if you missed a fire call on the
air, cause the phones would light up, and fast!

It was kind of a Pavlov's Dog thing... when the sirens went off, people
turned on their radios!
