IIRC, typical control room, not very big ... maybe 6 to 8 feet.  Remember, this is a very dry climate here, if I'm not holding onto the frame of my car when I get out, I can draw a 1-inch arc easily enough.  (Memo: Get leather upholstery next time...) And, it's fun to pet my cat in the dark and watch the lighning show.  Really.
