[BC] CD's Recalled for Posing Risk to PC's

Using a Google search, there are 26,100 titles listed on Amazon as
Copy-Protected. Many of these are Sony/BMG titles. Some use the
Suncomm DRM and some use XCP CD Proxy. Sony downplayed the issue as
about a few titles, then about 50 titles. If you look at the press
pages for First 4 Internet, that made the XCP software, it implies A LOT
more. And the impact is on MILLIONS of computers worldwide. Given the
TOTAL lack of honesty on the part of Sony until it gets caught in a lie,
I would anticipate that the number of titles will continue to climb.
Sony has made most of its statements to the press, and not put them on
their own webpage. Only after things got really well spread did they
begin to put SOME information on their website. Much of that was simply
wrong.
Given the impact on sales (spend a moment looking at the reviews these
CDs now have on Amazon for example) I would still anticipate legal
action from a few of their artists as well.
And there is still legal action open in many countries for the
installation of the rootkit.
There is an interesting idea around that Sony might already prebundle
this kind of thing into their VAIO systems... paranoid, yes, but given
the track record... no doubt there are a lot of caffeine and sugar
filled hackers digging deep into Sony systems right now ;)
John
PS - Just cause you're paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you
