Actually, there's a very expensive (> $10,000.00) hand made Japanese turntable
that does exactly this....and it's reputed to be the best sounding turntable
ever made.
Not to mention that there's zero groove wear.

You can also place a phonograph record on a scanner, and use a "virtual
stylus" to spin its way around the disc and play the audio, just based on
the scanned image of the disc's grooves. The quality is very poor, but
people have been able to do this using an ordinary PC scanner.
