Ditto the endorsement of EFAX.
I've used it for almost 6 years now. Started as a free user then converted
due to volume.
It great, but in the free mode you have to put up with an ad for each fax
you receive.
The ability to fax right off the computer virtually any type of file and get
an email confirmation of the completed reception of the fax is a great
asset. Also you can save the incoming faxes in several formats or in the
basic EFAX reader format if you wish, you can rename the faxes Vs the
alphabet soup designator EFAX used for the incoming faxes is a plus too.

You might try e-fax (www.efax.com). It's free if you receive fewer than 20
pages
per month. Otherwise $139.95 a year. Faxes are delivered to the e-mail
address you
specify. Local numbers are available in most area codes.
