While not claiming to agree with the basic premise of Rich's email, I
counted the radios in our house, just to see. (family of four, 2700 sq
foot 3 bedroom house):
Media center in living room
Cheap stereo system in rec room
Boom box in 4-yr old's bedroom
Boom box, clock radio and AM/FM/MP3 in 12-yr old's bedroom
Stereo table radio in wife's craft room/study
Clock radio in master bedroom
Counter radio in master bath
Portable solar/dynamo powered radio in kitchen
Portable AM/FM/SW radio in my travel kit
That's 11. We also have a radio in the truck (we're a single vehicle
family - with both of us working at the same place, we can't justify a
second... I'm sure that will change in about 4-5 years <g>). So, 12
radios for a family of four - and I suspect that, except for the little
guy's bedroom radio, which runs 24x7 (he prefers the local FM
news/talker) we probably don't listen to the radio in the house more
than 15 minutes a week, except on storm days. But, the fact remains,
there are 12 radios. Assuming we fall in the median range for family
size and income, then I guess you could take the US population of
295,734,134 (based on
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/us.html), divide by 4
and multiply by 12... arriving at 887,202,402 radios - almost 1 billion.
Since many city folks don't have a vehicle and many suburban/rural
families have 2 or 3 of them, I suspect that we can leave my one
vehicle/family example intact.
The things you find to do when it's quieter than usual on the
phones.....
