[BC] Operator license replacement

hi steve,
i'm not real familiar with the commercial license situation--it's my
understanding that the general op. license replaced the set of numbered
class radiotelephone licenses.
what i did not know is that they quit giving out the diploma type
certificates, which I thought they were still doing. I had assumed you got
something like the old 1st cl. phone but saying "General" instead of "First
Class." From other's remarks, i take it you now just get a card, similar to
a ham license, which in my opinion is too bad. The trend seems to be
"license reduction" for lack of a better term--a guy I know, who holds a FRA
locomotive operator license showed it to me once--it was just a piece of
white paper in his wallet. Don't know if pilots get anything fancy from
FAA or not.
FCC floated a proposal to hams a year or two ago, to quit issuing paper
completely--they just wanted to license a ham by creating a database record
for him, stating that the paper wasn't really needed by them anymore--the
only thing that really mattered was the record in the database. Hams
screamed about that, informing FCC that they needed paper to get reciprocol
licenses abroad, and some other reasons i can't remember now. But it showed
how FCC wants to reduce as much work as possible.

Rob:
I have a small card that replaced my First Class Radiotelephone License.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to the commission in time to get the larger
license. Will they now issue the larger, frameable licenses again? If not,
I'll save the time and keep the card. Anymore for those of us who struggled
through getting our First phones would like the larger for bragging rights
if nothing else. I guess it's now called General Radiotelephone, correct?
Thanks!
Steve

You can file for a replacement certificate. go to:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/commoperators/pg.html
Near the bottom it says:
How to Obtain a License
Submit FCC Form 605 and FCC Form 159 (fee processing form) along with the
appropriate Proof of Passing Certificates (for the requisite written
and/or
telegraphy examination elements) to apply for any commercial operator
license, with the exception that endorsement examinations do not require
the
filing of the Form 159 or any fees. Also, Restricted Radiotelephone
Operator
permits have no proof of passing certificate requirement. Use the FCC
Form
605 and the FCC Form 159 to renew your license or to replace a lost,
stolen,
or mutilated license. Many Commercial Operator License Examination (COLE)
Managers file these documents for applicants who test with them. Ask your
COLE Manager if they provide this service to their customers.
