I was trying to recall WPLJ's processing while listening to those clips.
Somewhere I have an aircheck circa 1989 when they were trying to beat Z-100
by pushing square wave out of the exciter. There was some really BAD audio
in New York and your clips sounded alot cleaner than what was going on HERE
at least.

For me, it still is, only this time, it's coming up with presets and beta
testing software.

And as for conventional thoughts, I remeber, for awhile, taking the AGC
output of the Tri-Mazes because they sounded more dense, nevermind that
there was virtually NO peak control.

I did run a pair of Tri-Mazes on a non-com for a weekend into an 8100 with
it's compression/limit stages bypassed. Sounded very punchy and would work
well with oldies, but not CHR. I still like the Mic Maze as a microphone
processor or for a mono AGC on an AM. He Ultramod processors had some
REALLY deep bass, even if it wasn't loud (sounded awesome with classical
music and jazz when run lightly). It's a shame he passed, would like to
have seen what else he could have designed.
