We also used little symbols of clouds, the sun and tornados that had some
polarized light reflective material on them. There was a key light up on
the lighting grid that had a motorized filter rotating in front of it that
shined on the map. The clouds would have raindrops coming out of them, the
sun rays would radiate out from the center and the tornado would spin. It
was actually really cool: long before the weather graphics came from a
computer.

I recall a stations that had a map of the USA and the state on a flip over
blackboard and used white Chalk to label everything..... Temperatures and
fronts etc.

When they upgraded they did exactly the same thing but had a pad of maps
printed on white paper and they started using the Carters black marks-a-lot on
the maps instead of flipping they simply panned to the right.

The next step was the polarized light. they had a larger mapa and put iy
together on the air with big magnetic "L" for low pressure and "H" for high
pressure as well as fronts, rain lightning and snow and sunshine. All of the
magnetic pieces had either flashing or rotating or moving polorazed lights
very impressive.

Wow has weather come along way from guys using black boards with white shoe
polish.
