I run Zonealarm mostly, and the XP firewall stays off, but sometimes I will 
turn ZA off and activate with windows firewall.  I have found that even with 
it turned off, some things appear to be blocked, so I set up the execptions 
list as if it is on, even when it isn't, and everything seems fine.

You are normally going to be behind a NAT router anyway, so the software 
firewall is only there to protect you from stuff on the local network, and 
to let you know if YOUR machine gets out of line.
