When I first saw Tom's message I was going to shine it on. I started my career in San Francisco when I was 16. I know some find that hard to believe but I did. Many others have started in the majors at a young age as well. I went to a small market for a break back in 1968. After 114 degree weather in the Central Valley (Stockton, CA) I decided to hoof it back to San Fran. I stayed in the larger markets until 2001 when I decided I'd had enough of the big cities and wanted to realize my dream of living in the country. Now in the middle of 30 acres and peace and quiet I work for the Class A FM Country station (trying to buy it) and its AM daytimer. At night I cut tracks for a classical satellite radio service (WorldSpace). I found that coming to a small market was like starting my career over again but this time coming to the table with major market experience. It's been fun! Now, on the other side of the coin I sometimes have problems with the rookies but I realize that's part of the charm of small town radio and it just comes with the territory. I bite my lip. Quite honestly, I was surprised at the attitudes towards small town radio that I read in this forum. Can't we be humble? :) There is a place for this kind of radio and it does serve a purpose.

Now, Now Tom, I thought that you were a pretty levelheaded guy. :)
No doubt the small market station has trouble keeping up with the big guys,
but you know what? This IS the nitch of small market radio. Who wants to
listen to a juke box all day long when you can hear the local coaches
corner, the obits, the church and community announcements.
I am saying that the bulk of radio success is in the small markets who
attempt to communicate with their audience, not at them. And you know what?
I would rather sit down to a 3.50 a plate lunch of home cooked goodies
rather than the 6.00 bag of whatever from McD's and the rest.
It is the small market boys that have been hauling the mail since the
beginning of time. The regional's have done yeoman service too, but you
just keep that Air America away from me, keep some of the conservative talk
boys away from me, and just keep the local patter of news, music and sports
coming on along!
Yeah baby, 'Most Madonna, Most Often'.
