Back in the early 1960s Tom Phillips did a jazz show 10 to midnight
M-F on WHFS 102.3 Bethesda, MD. He did it live on Fridays, but the
other nights were a form of voice-tracking. He'd recorded an intro
or outtro for each of the jazz LPs in the library. They were specific
to the LP, but generic regarding specific cuts. All on reel-to-reel
tape!!! The person on duty would cue to tape to match the next LP
(usually correctly), play Tom's intro and then a few cuts from the
LP. It was not uncommon to get phone calls wanting to talk to Tom.
"Sorry, but Tom is busy. Can I relay your request?" If the person on
duty was not lazy, they would find the right LP and play Tom's intro
and the request.
