I wished Continental still built SS, 1KW, AM boxes. They just seem to
have the best audio sound....at least in my ears.

We kinda sorta do that out here at Delano. We run AM with a 6dB carrier
reduction. Resting power is about 50 Kw, drives up to 250 Kw at 100%
modulation. Maybe 'Ol Dave can explaign it..it's a Continental Solid
State Modulator system. Looks just like SSB under modulation, if you
were to watch the plate volts and current. Vary with modulation.

If you're meaning that the average power of the carrier increases during

AM, that technique usually is called "controlled carrier" modulation.
The
old Heathkit DX-35 used it, for example. But that really isn't
supermodulation, it is just ~100% modulation of the carrier power that
exists at the instant of modulation -- and that carrier power is
controlled
by the modulating waveform.

It does put more r-f in the sidebands (without excessive distortion)
than
conventional AM of the same unmodulated carrier. But the varying
average
carrier value produces varying C/N ratio in the demodulated audio at the

receiver.
