Paul,
This is one of those "all horses are four legged animals, but not all
four legged animals are horses" kind of things.
It is correct to say that daytimers are class D's, but incorrect to say
that class D's are necessarily daytimers.
It is, however, correct to say that class D's only have LICENSES
for daytime operation. All other operation is an authorization of
some type, but not a true license.
There was a big effort in the '80's to eliminate all daytimers by
extending, first PSRA/PSSA's where possible, and later giving them
limited nighttime power. The X band was created to handle some that
didn't fit, however the way the rules were written it didn't work
out that way.
Basically, what the FCC was trying to do was give as many AM's as
possible some kind of night authorization.
I've always liked daytimers because you can do maintenance at more
reasonable times on them. <g> However, the FCC has turned them into
a dying breed by ruling that no new daytime only licenses will be
issued. Of course that doesn't stop them from granting 50 kW daytime,
250 W nighttime class B's with 3 or 4 towers daytime and 6 or more
at night, while calling THAT full time operation. <g>
It might be worthwhile for you to look at the basic rules on
Harold's site if you haven't already. You will find most of the
fundamentals in 73.21 thru 73.31.
Good luck with the site,
