Paul,
I live in Janesville which is a stones throw from Beloit. In fact, the
Beloit area is in our coverage. The General Motors plant and associated
support companies are located in Janesville. With over 3900 employees,
that closure will effect the region if the announcement comes. Beloit
has, in recent years, lost some major employers. At the moment, it
appears that another manufacturing plant in Beloit has fallen on hard
times and it will only be a matter of time before the big announcement
came.
On the other hand, living costs in this area are low. Housing costs are
reasonable to low depending on your tastes. Although the Beloit city
has no room to expand, thousands of new homes are being constructed in
the Janesville area. A typical new 1300 square foot home costs
$150,000. Renting a two bedroom apartment costs around six or seven
hundred a month.
Beloit also has more culture than Janesville. Beloit sports some rather
nice restaurants, the Beloit college, the Beloit Riverfest music
festival every July, and a major airshow at the Rock County airport a
couple of miles to the north. If fishing is your thing, be prepared to
drive out of Rock county to find decent fishing areas. Someone had
mentioned the cold and it is true that we have our cold snaps of
sub-zero weather. Most of January was milder though, temperatures often
approached the mid-thirties.
