I was in a TEF Class in Dallas this week where they showed the first one  but 
no explanations.
 
In Chicago Metra runs an electric rail system. The overheat catenarys are  
1,500 volts at 6,000 amps DC!
 
A couple of summers ago, lightning got into one of the substations and  
completed melted down one of the rectifier cabinets. All that was left was a  
smoking glob of melted parts. I wish I had the pictures again.
