Right. There are, indeed, a number of Broadcasters and stations out there who 
eschew such "begging" programming. Thankfully, I work for one of these 
companies. :) (I will be celebrating 19 years, here, this summer!)

As do I. Mostly the non-comms, which rely upon direct listener-support, and 
don't charge their programmers for airtime. Many of those stations only conduct 
their share-a-thons once a year, for a few days, tops. The good ones never 
beg. They  provide commentary about how the station has encouraged people, share 
listener stories, play lots of music, and announce the running total... not 
unlike Jerry Lewis' toteboard.
