I built my first 'solid state' (major term at the time) superhet from 
scratch for a science fair project in 1959 or so. Worked great! (I was so 
pleased ...) I recall aligning the tuning cap trimmers to WOWO then peaking 
the IFs. Why not a higher frequency station? WOWO was not either too strong 
or too weak and I could get the trimmers just right (mamma bear). I'd then 
tune up to the top of the dial (yep string dial pointer - home made) and 
peak for most noise. Test equipment?? -signal generator?? - why that was 
WOWO! Fond memories of young geekdom.
