I spent one winter in Watertown. It went below zero in November and
didn't get back above it until the end of January. That's where I
learned how to light a fire in a carburetor (not recommended BTW)
to get a car started when it was 25 below. Spring and fall are nice
there, but short. Whenever I drove northbound past Rockford it seemed
like the temperature dropped 10 degrees. Draw a line northwest from
Beloit on a map and see where you find the first hill tall enough to
slow down a brisk wind. New England is warm by comparison unless 
you are somewhere northwest of Portland up around Waterville.
