Completely homebrew design and build. It was rather stylish, also (young
designer/geek in action). A designer/geek is a bad combination. I was
accepted in 1962 to attend U. Cincinnati for Industrial Design and MIT for
EE. I chose design. Good choice? Bad choice?
I can see the importance of mentoring. When I visited MIT with my family
the summer of 1962 to make my decision, I wandered back in among the
cabinets of a mainframe. I got kicked out even though I said I had been
accepted to attend the school. If the person who had kicked me out said,
"Here's my card. Look me up when you've begun school and I'll show you how
this thing works," I would have chosen MIT without a second thought.
Turning points.
