Irv took our QEI mod mon to the tx site, wanting to
ensure I had accurately set the pilot and composite
levels. It was one of those slow motion events where
I couldn't say "NO!!!!" fast enough when I saw him
jam a cable directly into the slug hole in the Bird
sample section! Thankfully the tx tripped off, he was
OK. Irv thought the section was insulated. Of course,
it wasn't.

I had a staff engineer who demagged the heads every
Sunday night, ran the test tapes and logged the results.
Adjusted, if necessary. When I was hired at this AM/FM
combo, I was explicitly instructed that the owner's wishes
were the primary concern, above being on the air.

The elder owner demanded the lawns be manicured,
plants tended to, etc. One week the lawn tractor broke
down. The staff engineer was chasing down parts for it,
so he missed a Sunday night tape maintenance. Irv came
in early that week and wanted to know why the maintenance
was not performed.

He wasn't amused when I told him Tom was getting parts
for the lawn mower. He thought I was joking. He went to the
GM who informed him I was following orders, then to the
owner's nephew who told him likewise.

I respected Irv's acoustical knowledge, his presence at all
custom recordings made for Schulke. We may not have seen
eye to eye, but he did offer me a CE job at B101 in Philly. I
told Russ Mundschenk about it (he was the Best Man at my
wedding) and he took the job before leaving for iBiquity.
