RE: DFW TIS
You are correct. That is the configuration that I saw at DFW. I've been
trying to find my photos. But I have moved a couple times since 1998 and
I haven't been able to locate them so far.
I also rented a Cessna 150 and pilot at Rockwall airport on that trip so
that I could get some aerial photos of the Dallas 1190 12-tower night
site for a book that I was about to publish. I had trouble getting
enough contrast between the towers and the field they were located in.
So I kept asking the pilot to get lower as we circled the array numerous
times. I didn't realize how low we had actually gotten since I was
concentrating on the photo. But I finally got the shot I wanted at an
altitude of about 3/4 of the height of the towers and a horizontal
distance of about 2000 feet. I'm still surprised we didn't get into
trouble for that bit of stupidity. If you have a copy of my now out of
print book AM Broadcast Station Antenna Systems - A Basic Guide, check
out the photo on page 35.

IIRC the V147 antennas are 44ft, and mounted to a 5ft tower base with a
hinge for raising/lowering them, maximizing their height to the 49'
limit. That was a typical installation method - don't know if that was
the case there, you have seen it installed and I have not...
