Decades ago, WIND in Chicago used a prototype solid state five kilowatt
transmitter. I believe it was built by Westinghouse and a tentative model
number of
FQM-5. Anyone know if that transmitter is still there and how long it was in
service?

It was my understanding the year that Westinghouse demoed the 5 kW Am
transmitter at the NAB that their station was operating a version of the
transmitter at WIND.
Anyone else have any memories???????????.
Also it was amazing of running the 5kW transmitter on the NAB floor and then
one day it was off the air. Suppossedly the transmitter was shut down till
measurments could be made to accertain if the radiation from the dummy load
exceeded the FCC R & R.
Meanwhile a rumor was started on the floor that the transmitter ate its own
lunch. It was back on the air the last day of the Convention.
It is still very competetive out there.
