As a curator of a 250GY, BTA-1R, 20-V3, BC1-F, and BA-1k, I can attest that
these rigs sound great with fresh tubes. All of these have been replaced
with solid state transmitters as the main. As for using the tube rigs as a
standby...well, just don't turn off the filaments! Let these rigs go dark
for a few days and the tubes get gassy quick. (Actually the McMartin can be
counted upon to restart at some power level, since it has a solid state
driver).

So can the solid state ones.

And when there's a failure of something in the SS box,
and the parts take TIME to get there...well they can
be OFF the air.

It's not hard to maintain a BC-1G or the BTA 1R
series. It does take more effort than a SS box
however, and running one is certainly more expensive.
The one at WKDK is meticulously maintained. A good
sound makes money a lot easier to make on a stand
alone AM.
