Well, so far the public safety agencies around here are still old-tech,
so our newsroom still has at least one scanner at the assignment editor's
desk.  And I carry a hand-held with me in my lunch/junk bag...

In addition to the police, it's very handy for monitoring operations at the
airport (particularly when they declare an Alert Two and we scramble a 
van), local railroads, and NWS, if one isn't within earshot of the EAS box.
