With religious fanatics on the rampage and a theocracy in power I
think regulation of cable and satellite services is on the horizon.
The camel's nose under the tent might be something as simple as FM
transmitters in SIRIUS and XM receivers being received by passing
cars driven by deeply religious people on their way to meet their
mistresses. Maybe Jimmy Swaggart or Jim Bakker, et al in their
expensive cars paid for by little old ladies they've swindled out of
their savings.
I picture a car with its receiver tuned to Howard Stern parked next
to a church with a bad PA system. The FM signal will get into the PA
system and EMS will be called to handle mass cardiac arrests and a
local politician looking for votes will be attending the service.
We already know that serious issues are rarely on the docket. We're
in two wars, health care sucks, immigration has citizens' undies
twisted and terror is still getting lip service. What's highest on
the list of critical issues? A constitutional amendment to ban gay
marriage. With our priorities so out of whack there's nothing that
would surprise me. I believe it's just a matter of time before audio
and video subscription services, along with cable, will be regulated.
Also, don't discount the "level playing field" complaint by broadcasters.
