At 59 I can't hear the tone in this clip. And I don't think it is a failure
of my speakers, unfortunately. The ears are aging, whether I like it or not.
At age 22 I could hear 23k +. I was tested when I took my draft physical,
and they kept calling me back to the audio booth. They thought there was
some mistake. They tested me at least 4 times and finally the guy doing the
testing said he'd never seen anyone before that with hearing that high. TV
sets were very annoying (computer monitors weren't around yet!). They
hearing test was marked that I would be a great sonar operator.
I've avoided loud 'phones all my life, but age is still relentless. I kept
20+ pretty much thru my 20's but I started to notice a slow but steady
decline in the mid to late 30's. By the mid 40's a ringing slowly crept in
that helped mask the higher stuff. Even so I was still good to 15k well
into my late 40's. Last time I tied to see what I could hear (about 5 years
ago) I was losing it between 11k and 12k. It may be even lower by now. I'd
check it, but I'm afraid I'd be depressed by the drop.... :( So, I guess
the kids have the advantage now.
However, I can still detect stuff in music a lot of people miss. Maybe it's
just careful listening.
