Perhaps the hearing loss in the population due to age and/or ear abuse is 
the reason that the shrill 'processing' on radio and CDs is prevalent and 
not troublesome to most.

I regret not being able to listen to commercial FM radio to any extent 
anymore. Public is still fairly moderate. I've noticed many religious 
stations are shrill also.

During our manatee research we inject 15kHZ tones into the tanks (at low 
dB's) which I could hear when I was testing the hydrophones.
