According to this article, who source I can't recall at the moment, AT&T
built WEAF to be a showcase for broadcasting because they expected to make a
lot of money leasing network lines to radio stations all over the country-
and also selling them broadcast equipment via their subsidiary
Western-Electric. So it made sense for them to put on a good show to
promote broadcasting in general and WE-sales in particular. WEAF eventually
became WNBC- flagship of the NBC radio network.
