>>The RIAA has everyone so spooked about theft that no one is willing
to risk years of litigations. Remember, this is the group that went
after kids downloading music. While I don't like the idea of theft of
intellectual property it seemed counterproductive to sue your
customers. I don't think they make a distinction between music and text.

What seems foolish to me is their fear of digital, except for the
ability to copy CDs. All the devices they worry about are not CD
quality and aren't exact copies of the originals any more than an
analog copy would be. I can make an equally good copy from the analog
outputs of most of the devices they attack.<<

In my particular line of work, it's often said that if you secure
something too tightly, people will find ways around it. They will block
security doors open and post their 18-character passwords on Post-Its on
their computer monitor. I don't think the RIAA understands this,
because the instant they manage to lock down something, either by
technology or the law, someone somewhere will find a work-around. The
hackers find it to be a challenge and the ordinary person just trying to
do his job finds it to be a nuisance, but either way, the RIAA won't
have any more control over recordings than they do now. As Princess
Leia said (and she's been quoted by so many), "The more you tighten your
grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
