I used to consider it a job well done when I could change a ribbon
without getting any ink stains on my fingers.
Otherwise, IIRC, it took a scrub brush and Ajax to remove it, AP or UPI.
BTW, I believe there may have been ten bells when Elvis died. I
recall there were several rows of "XXXs" on the paper. I was on the
air when it happened, and remember ripping the story from the AP
machine and reading it on the air. Being an album rock station, I
don't think there was a single Elvis disk among the several thousand
LPs we had in the library.
One last thing: This reminds me of a Carol Burnette Show sketch where
Tim Conway plays a news reader on a new show that presents news live
as it comes from the "news machine." The funny part was how stupid he
looked while he sat there, twiddling his thumbs, uneasily waiting for
news to happen.
