Well, with the very limited FM antenna on my stereo, I do have a very *few*
"quiet" channels between the 2-3 dozen stations. I tested this unit on one of
the "quiet" ones. It was unlistenable at 3' away, due to the white noise level
and loss of stereo. In the car, there are two (count them: *two*) FM
frequencies with very weak, unlistenable signals. I set the unit to either of them, and
it was only listenable if held up to the windshield, closest to the radio
antenna, which is less than 2' from that corner of the glass. Either this unit is
defective, or it is just grossly under-powered even for a P15 device.
Once I added the 18" wires, the range to the house stereo went from barely 3'
to about 10-12. It became completely lost in the hiss at about 15'. (The
farthest corner of the room.) In the car, with the unit sitting on the seat, it's
about 99.5% with only an occasional, tolerable glitch.
I cannot imagine *that* being "illegal". You wouldn't even be able to hear
the thing in another car, 15' away. Probebly even less than that, considering
that by placing it on the seat, the body of the car would shild a lot of the
signal from any nearby vehicles. Add to that, the fact that the frequency is
*not* truly clear, and the range is just that much less. (It is an unlistanable
frequency, because what little signal is there, is just much to spotty and weak
for anyone in this area to be *listening* to it. It's an LPFM out on Long
island, which once in a great while becomes audible if the unit is off.
