[BC] Assistance needed: My bvh 3100p/s HATES ME

The machine will not play tape although it will pass audio if tape is 
moved across the heads. It says ext ref and tbc is flashing but I 
can't find how to move it to internal sync (don't have the manual, 
got the beast as a gift). Also there is an awful smell of caps gone 
from board ck27. There is no smell if all boards are removed and the 
machine is on.  Any suggestions on ideal caps will be appreciated 
unless this is not a critical point and any will do.  If you can 
email me as well as posting on the list I will be grateful.
