[BC] Sound card ideas

I actually have on computer where the onboard sound is completely
inadequate, even though it's a fairly modern system board. It's almost as
though the record input audio is over-compressed or something , and it's not
a problem with just overdriving the input as I have been able to adjust that
over a very wide range. Nothing could make it record properly--maybe it was
a driver problem but at the time there weren't any better drivers available.
That machine got an Audiophile 2496 and we get very nice audio from it even
though it's unbalanced I/O.
