I had a similar experience with newegg.com a few years back. A brand new
floppy drive (back when those were still important!) arrived non-functional. (It
was $6.) I called to let them know. They sent me a new one, gratis. When I
asked of they wanted me to ship the defective unit back, they said, "No, just toss
it."

Naturally, I didn't... I repaired it. ;) It was just a broken trace near the
power connector. Super easy fix. Free floppy drive.

I've been a loyal Newegg customer ever since. Was it worth it? Well, I must
have spent more than $1K with them, since. That's *not* including at least $3K
more for friends and local churches, for whom I've built computers. :)

Similar story:

A good friend of mine used to manage a local Radio Shack a few years ago. He
told me about a customer who returned with an old phone he had bought there a
few years prior. It was discontinued. After a brief discussion, my friend GAVE
him a new one, as a "promotional". Within a very short time, this same
customer was back and spent well over $800 on 2-way radio gear for his small
business.

My firend's District Manager chewed him out for "giving away" a $19 phone.
(That cost the store about $9.50!)

He is no longer working for Radio Shack. This is just ONE example of MANY,
why.

Basically, his bosses were too much like Dilbert's Pointy-Haired Boss.
