[BC] Wind and STL Mutes

Hmmm, always the same kind of box, always the high
winds. Let me guess. I guess that the receiver uses a
narrow-bandwidth filter in its PLL so the Doppler associated
with the path-link change due to winds, causes it to unlock.

Before anybody argues “it can’t happen,” I used to work for
Tycho Technology, a company in Boulder, CO., which
makes wind profilers that measure winds at various
altitudes. These work under the same principles that,
as the dielectric moves (air), the path-link changes.
Although it always averages as the physical link
distance, there could be several wavelength changes
per millisecond during winds and, if the PLL can’t
track that fast, it will squelch the receiver as it
detects an unlock condition.

Bring this information to the attention of the
company’s engineering department, and after a
few “impossible” retorts, they may provide a simple
fix such as changing a capacitor value.
