Let's remember what grease is for, to provide a surface layer
in which the molecular shear can safely occur with no damage
to the metal parts, the shear being entirely within the grease.
Metal on metal doesn't work very well.
Neither grit suspended in the grease. Can you say rubbing compound ?

The purpose of greasing the bearings would be to flush out, wash
if you will, the grit from the lubricant by replacement.
Excess grease increases friction within the lubricant, causing heat.
Insufficient lubricant causes metal to metal contact, also with
increased heat, and other catastrophic affects, so.....

Follow the manufacturers recommendation for YOUR installation.
