[BC] "Jealous" equipment

The fact is, IT has become broadcast engineers' purview. We are expected to
bring IT knowlege to the table as a 'value added' service with no formalized
training. In simpler terms, the station wants us to be able to wriggle our
collective noses and instantly become IT experts.

Trust me, it doesn't happen! Working for Barix I spend day after day
explaining the same simple IT concepts to station engineers. I gladly do so
because these engineers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They are
expected to KNOW this stuff with zero training-and most are too scared to tell
their management that it just isn't so. These same clueless managers pay scads
of money training their salespersons-yet not a penny for keeping up with
technology for the engineer.
Ironically, the average good IT engineer not only makes more money then the
average radio engineer, they also work better hours, GET necessary training
and work in much better working conditions-not ton mention that IT desn't
genberally require you to work with life threatening high voltages-usually
alone and when tired.

You know what? Reading this thread is like a bad dream! What we are doing
here is getting a radio program to a radio station via satellite.
