I'll echo Dana's comments.  When you start seeing new transmitters with Ethernet jacks on the front panel, you know it's a different world.  The two disciplines have already merged, judging by what I see in our tech-ops center, and any engineer who doesn't learn at least the basics of IT is going to be operationally obsolete very quickly.
