Many of the early ones only did a few channels at the bottom and the  
top of the band.

For years now, they will do every channel, and most will transmit on  
87.7 and 87.9 MHz as MOST car radios will tune in those frequencies.

SOME of them will go further out of the bottom of the band, but not  
the top (for good reason).

I have a few of these things.  Mine meet Part 15, so they don't work  
worth squat.   I have disconnected my CD changer and connect an iPod  
interface in its place.  The touch screen interface on the car  
doesn't control the iPod NEARLY as well as the iPod's own interface,  
but that is the common issue for now.  Hopefully, someone will allow  
a REAL iPod like interface on the car's touch screen someday.
