I made a few changes from things learned.
1. I upgraded the drivers for my M Audio Delta 196 sound card. The old drivers
were conflicting with something, causing things to constantly lock up. The new
drivers sound better and no lock ups. The irony is that I tried these drivers
with this machine last year when it had the Sempron processor and found they
were 'clicking'(clicks about 40 db down), so I went back to the older driver.
Since then, I upgraded the processor to a faster 'real' Athlon and that seems
to have gotten rid of the clicking problem. At the same time I also added a gB
of RAM (2 gigs in this machine).
2. I'm now using a beta of the Spider player for playback instead of Winamp.
Spider has a built in crossfader that has always worked well (I set it for 3
seconds). I was told that the beta player had significant sonic improvements
over the released one. It seems to be true!
