I have a working Smith-Corona type writer that still come out from  
time to time to fill out multi-part NCR forms.  It hasn't needed any  
repairs I couldn't take on myself though.

There are many dot matrix printers in use.  Nearly all rental car  
companies use them.  Enterprise not only uses them, but most locations  
(except at airport locations) have only one printer.  The employees go  
to filling out forms by hand if the printer fails!  It just turns out  
they are very reliable.
