Motion sensors and an alarm company are much cheaper IF you can get them to
work in the RF field.  I've seen some work fine and others fail big time.
Cheaper than dog food but not nearly as fun.  Fence the entire area where
the ground radials are and set loose 3 or 4 pit bulls.  Take good care of
them and they will do the same for you.  My dogs alert on the slightest
noise.  Yes it would be cheaper to have an alarm system but not as much fun.
Neighbor got robbed and when asked why they chose their house and not mine
the guy replied "Have you seen the size of those dogs?" LOL  At the time I
had an English Mastiff and a Weimaraner which weighed 120 pounds.  Deterrent
is effective and that huge igloo dog house, that they never use (I have a
pet door for them LOL), has itself kept people from even walking up the hill
to my home.  By the way I witnessed the break in next door and called the
police.  They set up a trap and let them leave the property and then stopped
them off site so it was a theft.  They guy had only been out of jail one day
and his gf who was with him for a week.  I guess they learn nothing in
prison.
