Yes, it does work, IF you have jocks on the air with it that can use the
playlist daypart-style to support the station's entire direction... you
know, a 'real' jock. If you just leave it to the scheduling software
though, it can end up sounding kinda weird...
Arron Tippin (sp?) had a line in a song I always used to keep things in
perspective... "you've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for any
thing"... whatever it is that you pick for your station to do - do it
consistantly, do it well, and yes... eventually you can break the playlist,
play an album cut, etc. IFFFFF you are doing it in the same context as your
station's general mission statement.
You can make a really big deal out of it and win big time.
(my most successful remote pulled the client about 100k$ worth of cash sales
in about 3 hours... playing stream of consiousness hot country music, and
country album cuts/remixes. and... I really didn't care if Leann Womacks
"hope you dance" was about #1 then... it darned sure didn't support what we
were doing at that remote, so... when it came up on the scheduler... I just
axed it Quick. Though the song WAS approriate for the 'crying in your beer
request hour, the after school request time, etc.'
In other words, if you play "the BEST country around"...
why would you NOT play the BEST county album cut to cross your desk this
week? Play them at a time or in a way that make them the BEST they can be.
Or why not play the BEST crossover hits when they are appropriate to what
your listeners and your station are doing?? I the listeners call and ask
why you don't play a particular song... why not at least TRY it?? (like...
Mercy Me... they LIVE here in town, went to our high school, support the
local businesses... they probably shouldn't be in our 90-min rotation on a
current country format... but... they should be supported by their hometown
station, so it's up to the programming and the jocks to find a way to get
the music out in a way that wins for everyone... the Listeners, the Mercy Me
guys, the station.... It can be done, and done well, and happen under the
banner of the BEST country around! It just happens to be a lot of work!
Maybe that is the keyword... work... )
