[BC] Computer problem with Compaq

This is interesting, as I just lost a hard drive, primarily, I think,
to heat, with similar symptoms. (The fan would start, and then about
6 seconds later, stop. Laptop would get quite warm.)

I am informed that these fans do die, and need to be replaced. Of
course, I now have to replace a HD and a fan (<g>), but then again,
that's what happens from time to time.

Fortunately, I had most things backed up, but a couple of the most
recent files were lost. It could have been a lot worse.
