Have you been in Wal-Mart recently? At least in the stores near me, they
replaced all their in-store TV sets with widescreen flat-panel displays.

However, Wal-Mart's in-store TV network is still distributing its content
as conventional 4:3 video (probably in analog NTSC, too).

Yup, you guessed it... all those fancy new monitors are displaying the
Wal-Mart network as 4:3 video stretched out to fill the 16:9 widescreen
aspect ratio!

I've also seen the opposite: in-store TV sets displaying widescreen video,
shrunk down to fit the regular 4:3 aspect ratio, making everyone look
skinny. Too bad most TV sets don't have a user-adjustable Vertical Height
control, because if it was broadcast that way, then everyone could have
widescreen TV without needing to buy any new equipment!
